Chamber Deputy Speaker Miron Mitrea resigns from PSD over jail sentence

Chamber Deputy Speaker Miron Mitrea resigns from PSD over jail sentence   Social Democrat MP Miron Mitrea, Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies informed PSD leaders on Sunday he would give up all his political positions inside the party and in the Parliament and that it is the last time he would take the floor during a party leadership meeting. Mitrea confirmed the information to journalists later on, saying he would withdraw from politics starting next year.

Party sources told Mediafax that Mitrea’s move is related to his file and that he wants to give an example to all those who have criminal files, as he doesn’t want to affect PSD’s image.

Miron Mitrea has been sentenced to 2 years in prison in October this year, yet the ruling is not final. He is accused he received EUR 300,000 bribery in the guise of construction works at his mother’s house while he was Transport Minister in Adrian Nastase Government. Mitrea would have received this bribe from Irina Jianu, the former chief of the State Constructions Inspectorate, in exchange for the Jianu’s appointment at the above-mentioned institution’s helm.
