Constitutional Court rejects GEO on early elections

Romanian Constitutional Court (CCR) has rejected on Thursday the emergency ordinance issued by Orban Government that was regulating the framework for organising early elections.

The GEO was shortening the legal time frames so that early elections could be held by the end of June. Now that the GEO has been rejected, according to the deadlines currently in force, early elections cannot be held earlier than July.

The time frame for establishing early elections was shortened from 90 days to 50 days, according to the GEO provisions.

The CCR’s ruling has a major impact in the snap elections issue, as it comes several hours before the investiture vote for Citu Cabinet, which should have been a sacrifice proposal so that it should be rejected and go ahead with the early elections scenario.
