A county in Romania wants to change its name. Olt County Council will hold a referendum on October 15 in the attempt to change the county’s name from Olt to Olt-Romanați.
The citizens of Olt are called to say “Yes” or “No” to the question: “Do you agree the county of Olt to be named Olt-Romanați?” Olt County Council is allotting RON 500,000 to organize the referendum.
The draft on the referendum has been passed on Thursday by the majority of county councilmen represented by PSD and ALDE, while the PNL and PMP councilmen vetoed the referendum, arguing it cost more than RON 500,000 and that citizens are less interested in the referendum and in changing the county’s name.
In retort, the leader of the Olt County Council, Marius Oprescu, said that the action to change the county’s name comes as a moral compensation for the inhabitants of the former Romanați county, adding the population will not have to change their documents if the referendum is validated.
