S.O.S. Romania President Diana Şoşoacă filed her candidacy for the presidential elections with the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) on Thursday. The Constitutional Court rejected her candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections.
Diana Sosoacă went to the BEC headquarters wearing boxing gloves, saying that she had been elected honorary president of the Boxing Federation.
“If I am not allowed to run and I am stopped again, their elections and their system will come unstuck,” said Diana Sosoacă, waving her boxing gloves in the air. “I am proud of what I have done. I do not renounce any behavior,” she also said in front of her supporters.
The Central Electoral Bureau has confirmed the filing of Diana Şoşoacă’s candidacy and the electoral symbol that the S.O.S. Romania party wants to use in the presidential elections. Bec is yet to rule on the registration of the candidacy.
On Wednesday, Diana Şoşoacă announced that she will submit her file to register for the electoral race on Thursday, claiming that the Central Electoral Bureau and the Constitutional Court can no longer reject her candidacy for the same reasons as in October 2024.
“From a legal point of view, after analyzing the whole situation with our lawyers, they are no longer allowed to ban me, because you cannot ban the same candidate twice for the same reasons, you cannot be tried twice for the same act. Attention! So, the CCR and the BEC no longer have the right to cancel my candidacy on the grounds of Decision number 2 of October 5, 2024. It is a principle of law that operates at the international level, you cannot be tried and convicted twice for the same act”, explained the leader of S.O.S. Romania.
By Wednesday, the BEC had validated the candidacies submitted by Nicuşor Dan (independent) and Crin Antonescu (‘Romania Forward’ Alliance) and president of the USR, Elena Lasconi. The deadline for submitting candidacies is March 15.
In October 2024, the Constitutional Court of Romania admitted, by majority vote, the appeals filed by two individuals and annulled the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 18/D of October 3, 2024 regarding the registration of the candidacy and electoral symbol of Diana Iovanovici-Şoşoacă in the 2024 Romanian presidential elections.
