Ex-president Basescu wins lawsuit against former media chief Sorin Rosca Stanescu

Former president of Romania, Traian Basescu won the slander action against former senator and media director Sorin Rosca Stanescu, who must pay RON 100 symbolic compensations to the former head of state. The ruling is not final and it can be challenged within 10 days.

Stanescu publicly stated in 2013 that Basescu would have received bribe from the company dealing with the Rosia Montana mining exploitation in order to support its interests. The former journalist also said that Basescu would possess hidden bank accounts abroad.

Presently, Sorin Rosca Stanescu is serving a two-year jail sentence in Rompetrol file, following a final decision ruled in October last year. Rosca Stanescu received a one-year sentence for using privileged information and two years sentence for setting up an organized crime group. Following punishments’ merger, the former Senator got the hardest sentence, which was increased up to four more months.

Previously, the journalist had been acquitted in 2012 in this case. Before being placed behind bars, he claimed his innocence one more time.
