Former President Traian Basescu, currently chairman of the People’s Movement Party (PMP) says the union with Republic of Moldova, for which the decision of Parliaments in the two countries is needed, is not an easy task, it has advantages and disadvantages.
“Reunification should not be left to the propaganda. The two parliaments should decide. I support the decision, but it is not an easy task. There are advantages and disadvantages. Look at the problems regarding Transdnestria, which would be negotiated with Moscow, a region with troops and military personnel, the talks with Kiev, which had the region included in its territory from the historical point of view. The difference in wages and social assistance should be covered,” Traian Basescu told a private broadcaster, jurnalul.ro informs.
The former president claims Romania could cover such expenses. Furthermore, Romania should cover the electricity supply, as Moldova ensures only 30% of its consumption.
“On the other hand, we are the only country carrying the burden of the consequences of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact,” he added.
The PMP leader says advantages are related to the area of 33,000 square km, mainly agricultural land, which would improve Romania’s agricultural potential in the EU, and the almost 4 million population, which would bring an increased number of votes in the European parliament.
