The German Embassy in Bucharest has warned on Friday that parliamentary immunity should not be misused in order to protect certain individuals and says it notices “with great attention and concern” the events of this period that “have direct effects on Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) evaluation process.”
According to a press release, the institutions that support the rule of law in Romania have to able to work “without limitation”.
“From our perspective, it is crucial that the work of institutions which support, protect and further develop the rule of law in Romania can take place without limitations. Respect for the independence of the judiciary and for the principle of separation of powers requires addressing parliamentary immunity in such a manner, that it is not frequently used improperly, in order to protect certain individuals. In this context, we observe with great attention and concern the current events which have direct effects on the CVM evaluation process,” the Embassy release reads.
On the other hand, the German Embassy in Bucharest announced that it supports the “constant efforts” of the Romanian authorities for prosecution in the fight against corruption.
