Government Sets Parliamentary Election Date: Campaign Starts Soon

The spokesperson of the government, Mihai Constantin, presented the calendar of the December 1 parliamentary elections on Wednesday. October 17 is the deadline by which political parties, political alliances, electoral alliances or organizations of citizens belonging to national minorities can submit their lists of candidates and independent candidacies in the country’s electoral constituencies.

The electoral campaign starts on November 1.

“In order to organize the parliamentary elections of December 1, 2024 and ensure the right to vote of citizens, both from the country and outside the borders, in the best possible conditions, the government approved the necessary legislation today. These three government decisions establish in detail the calendar of electoral actions, technical measures and expenses for the preparation, organization and holding of the elections for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies”, announced the government spokesperson.

Mihai Constantin specified that after completing the first step in the electoral calendar, namely the establishment of the Central Electoral Bureau, the main calendar milestones are as follows:

  • September 10: Deadline for submitting the electoral alliance protocol to the Central Electoral Bureau.
  • September 16: Deadline for voters with a domicile in the country but residing abroad, as well as those domiciled abroad, to register in the Electoral Register with their foreign address, with the option to vote at a polling station or by mail, on the website votstrăinătate.ro.
  • Starting September 16, diplomatic missions and consular offices will communicate proposals for polling stations abroad to the Permanent Electoral Authority.
  • By October 2: Submission of candidate lists and independent candidacies for the Senate and Chamber of Deputies to the electoral constituency for Romanian citizens domiciled or residing abroad, as well as submission of candidate lists by organizations representing national minorities for all electoral constituencies.
  • October 17: Deadline for voters domiciled in the country and residing abroad, as well as those domiciled abroad, to register in the Electoral Register with their foreign address and the option for voting by mail.
  • October 17: Deadline for political parties, political alliances, electoral alliances, or organizations representing national minorities to submit candidate lists and independent candidacies in the country’s electoral constituencies.
  • October 22: Deadline for establishing and submitting electoral symbols to the Central Electoral Bureau.
  • October 31: Allocation of airtime to political parties, political alliances, electoral alliances, and organizations representing national minorities participating in the elections.
  • November 1: Start of the electoral campaign.
  • November 30, 7:00 AM: End of the electoral campaign.
  • November 30, 7:00 AM (local time): Start of the first day of voting abroad.
  • November 30, 9:00 PM (local time): End of the first day of voting abroad.
  • November 30, 9:00 PM – 11:59 PM (local time): Continuation of voting abroad for voters who are at the polling station at 9:00 PM local time, as well as those who are in line outside the polling station at the same time.
  • December 1, 7:00 AM: Start of voting in the country. Start of the second day of voting abroad.
  • December 1, 9:00 PM: End of voting in the country. End of the second day of voting abroad.
  • December 1, 9:00 PM – 11:59 PM (local time): Continuation of voting abroad for voters who are at the polling station at 9:00 PM local time, as well as those who are in line outside the polling station at the same time.
