Guy Verhofstadt sends warning to the Gov’t in Bucharest after Romania has taken over the EU Presidency

Leader of ALDE Europe, Guy Verhofstadt has stated in a Facebook post on Thursday that Romania takes over the EU Presidency ‘at a critical time’, warning that the Government in Bucharest must fulfill its commitments on the rule of law and enforce all recommendation of the Venice Commission. At the same time, Verhofstadt has sent a warning to ALDE Romania, led by Calin Popescu Tariceanu.

Romania takes over the EU Presidency at a critical time, when several legislative negotiations need to be concluded ahead of European elections. I wish them best of luck. At the same time the government must deliver on their commitments with regard to the rule of law: the reforms of the judiciary, of the criminal code and also the NGO law must fully reflect the recommendations of the Venice Commission, and be re-assessed by this expert body before enactment. Romanian liberals promised to take this path – we expect that they deliver without delay. If they do, they have their full place inside the ALDE family. If they don’t, then not,” says Verhofstadt’s Facebook post.
