Hungarian Gov’t condemns vandalism on Liberty Statue in Arad

On Monday, Hungary’s Government condemned vandalism on the Liberty Statue located in the Hungarian-Romanian Reconciliation Park in Arad, asking Romanian authorities to find those persons guilty of such a “ primitive and barbaric action”.

“It is a primitive, barbaric and unforgivable act of instigation,” the Hungarian vice-premier Zsolt Semjen told MTI.

He added that the Hungarian Executive is expecting that Romania quickly find the authors of this vandalism action.

The Liberty Statue in Arad was vandalized on Saturday, as it was partially painted in the colors of the Romanian flag. Policemen are trying to identify the authors, three hooded-persons caught on surveillance cameras.

According to UDMR Arad president, Levente Bognar, also Arad’s deputy mayor, the statue was vandalized on Saturday around 11 a.m. Some of its elements were painted in red, yellow and blue and obscene words have been written on the statue’s body with black spray.
