Romanian President Klaus Iohannis stated on Friday in an interview granted to the French TV5Monde that there is corruption in Romania, underlining he is set to support the authorities involved in this fight.
Asked if he has the necessary tools to fight against corruption, as he promised during the presidential electoral campaign, Iohannis said: “It is not by accident that the fight against corruption was one of the main topics of my presidential campaign, but simply because there is corruption in Romania and it is a threat to the national security. One can easily see there was corruption at the top of Romanian politics.”
Yet, the head of state underlined that important steps were taken in the fight against corruption.
“We have notable results ranging from politicians to famous office holders who have been convicted for corruption and therefore we have the proof that eradicating corruption which restrains Romania’s development is not just a wish but a real fact,” Iohannis said.
“Work still needs to be done. And I am determined to support authorities involved in the fight against corruption. The President has certain arms by appointing the chief prosecutor of the National Anti-corruption Directorate, by publicly tackling this topic and I think I have done this since the beginning of my term until now, to send several clear messages: the fight against corruption must proceed forcibly,” the Romanian president concluded.
