The Romanian Presidential Administration has announced it organises in Bucharest, during April 6-7, together with the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) of the Council of Europe, with the support of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the International Conference “Interaction between the majority and political opposition in democracy”. The conference will be hosted by the Cotroceni Palace under the patronage of the Romanian President and of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The opening the international conference is scheduled on Thursday, April 6, at 15:30h. The opening speeches will be held by the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, by the Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General, Mrs. Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Pedro Agramunt and by the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Romanian President will meet with senior representatives of the Council of Europe institutions. The conference aims to focus on the importance of good cooperation between the opposition and the political majority for a balanced and pluralistic society that works on democratic principles and on the rule of law.
The debates of the conference will support the conceptual activity of the Venice Commission, which will draw up a report on this issue, including possible guidelines of the Council of Europe on the role and responsibilities of the political majority and its interaction with the opposition, in response to the request by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The conference is to be attended by over 100 participants: rapporteurs and members of the Venice Commission and of the Secretariat of the Commission; representatives of the Member States of the Council of Europe (in particular representatives of European national parliaments); academics and other experts, Romanian officials; representatives of the ruling parliamentary political parties and of the opposition; representatives of the civil society; foreign diplomatic corps accredited in Bucharest; representatives of the Constitutional Court, the Ombudsman, the media, the Presidential Administration informs.
