Iohannis-Komorowski agreement on regional leaders’ meeting in Bucharest this autumn

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis agreed together with his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski to organize in Bucharest this autumn a new edition of the meeting between heads of state in the region to pave the way for the NATO summit due in Warsaw in 2016. President Klaus Iohannis has arrived on Wednesday evening in Poland, on an official two-day visit.

“Together with Mr. Komorowski we decided to organize this autumn in Bucharest a new edition of a meeting between heads of state in the same format it took place in July last year in Warsaw. It will be a regional format, an extremely important format which strengthens regional cooperation and it is a very useful tool in the view of NATO summit due in Warsaw in 2016,” Iohannis told a joint press conference with the Polish president.

Romanian president said the precise date of this meeting is to be determined together with the other heads of state.

“The meeting will definitely contribute to the improvement of the regional cohesion and to the harmonization of our points of view for the NATO summit,” Iohannis also argued.

The Romanian and Polish presidents also tackled  the Ukraine issue in their talks, with Iohannis reconfirming Romania’s entire availability to contribute, next to Poland and other EU partners, to the reform process advance in Ukraine.”

Polish President Komorowski informed he would try to host the meeting of Romanian, Polish and Ukrainian presidents in Poland, arguing the West “will have to be ready also for a negative development of the situation in Ukraine.”

President Bronislaw Komorowski also stated that his country is counting on collaboration with Romania to draft a joint position on NATO eastern flank, adding that a decision is needed to increase the security feeling in the region.

The Polish official suggested that a potential collaboration field between Romania and Poland is the regional topic, with a special focus on Ukraine and Republic of Moldova.

On Thursday, President Klaus Iohannis laid a wreath and sign in the Book of Honour at the Unknown Soldier’s Memorial and attended a working lunch given in his honour by the Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Radoslaw Sikorski. The Romanian head of state also met the Speaker of the Senate of Poland, Bogdan Borusewicz.

In the afternoon, Klaus Iohannis is to meet members of the Romanian community living in Poland. On Friday, the Romanian President will meet Polish Prime minister, Ewa Kopacz.

Before leaving for Warsaw, Klaus Iohannis underlined that the relation with Poland is a priority to Romania, both at European and trans-Atlantic level, the two countries being linked by a joint history of cooperation and solidarity in crucial moments.
