Iohannis: Reasonable chance for gov’t shift through no-confidence vote

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said there is a reasonable chance for the incumbent government to be replaced through a no-confidence vote. Yet, the head of state avoided framing any date for that.

Asked during an interview for Digi24 if the has the feeling that he “will have his own government” before the 2016 elections, Klaus Iohannis stated: “The situation is moving on so that I can say there is a reasonable chance to topple the government by a no-confidence vote.”

Questioned of this might happen by the end of this parliamentary session, the president said he wouldn’t answer this question, for “it would be a speculation” and he won’t make any.

As a matter of fact, Iohannis kept on slamming the Government latest decisions. For example he said he deeply doubted the fiscal cuts announced by Ponta Cabinet, arguing the Executive didn’t say anything how it will manage these duties and taxes’ reductions.

“Government assumed the Fiscal Code proposal, in theory they are interesting things, but I have serious question marks on their implementation,” Iohannis stated. Asked why would the Government table these resolutions, he explained: “For reasons of image. They look good.”

At the same time, commenting on the Executive’s statements against the IMF agreement’s extension, the Romania’s President pointed out it is not only the Government to decide if an agreement is necessary or not. In his view, it would be extremely serious if the government came the decision in this way, without knowing the motivations.
