LIBE Committee: Romania and Bulgaria are ready to join Schengen

The European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) has approved on Wednesday a report denouncing ‘some deficiencies’ in the functioning of the Schengen area, such as temporary border controls introduced as a result of the wave of migrants, the same text mentioning that Romania and Bulgaria are ready for an immediate entry into this free movement area, the EFE agency reports, quoted by

The LIBE MEPs call on the governments of the Schengen states to enforce the mutual trust criterion which stands at the basis of this instrument allowing freedom of movement between states without border controls.

This is the first annual report on the functioning of the Schengen area drawn by the European Parliament.

Moreover, it condemns ‘any lifting of physical barriers, such as fences’. Hungary raised such fences to stop immigration at its border with Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia, only the latter being part of Schengen area.

On the other hand, MEPs in this committee reiterated in their report that Romania and Bulgaria are ready for immediate joining the Schengen area, a position shared by the European Commission, but not by the European Council where the Member States are represented.
