Liberals ask for re-voting in Gabriel Oprea case

The Liberals informed on Thursday that they would ask the Parliament to re-vote the prosecution request for the ex-Interior minister Gabriel Oprea. The Liberals also called on Social Democrat chair Liviu Dragnea to agree to the re-voting proceeding.

“We are asking the PSD convicted chair Liviu Dragnea, who has been denying the evidence of the massive vote given by PSD-ALDE-PRU to protect Gabriel Oprea, to agree to this proposal. Otherwise, it will be the proof that Gabriel Oprea will run on the PSD lists for a new MP term in order to preserve his immunity,” reads a press release by the National Liberal Party.

The Liberals claim that their senators have openly voted for Oprea’s prosecution and that the vetoes came from “PSD, ALDE and acolytes”, insisting on Dragnea that he should accept to re-vote the DNA’s request.

PNL invokes the Constitutional Court decision in 2016 that allows the resuming of the vote as it is ‘an act of the regulation autonomy of the two chambers of the Parliament’.

In retort, PSD chair Liviu Dragnea said that Social Democrats would not block the re-voting in Gabriel Oprea’s case and that “PSD will not hesitate if it comes to this”.

President Iohannis: The renewal of the political class is needed

Moreover, Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis referred to this topic once again, stating that the Senate’s vote vetoing the prosecution request against Gabriel Oprea proves that the renewal of the political class and a parliamentary reform are needed.

“In my view, until we manage to have clean, dedicated people in Parliament, we’ll not be able to move things forward,” the President said, adding that without a political class cleaning Romania cannot be built the way Romanians want.

President Iohannis also insisted that the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies must understand that the guilt or innocence is not voted in Parliament but the vote is on prosecution must continue or not.
