Liberals challenged cyber security law to the Constitutional Court, despite voting for it in Senate

Liberal deputies challenged the cyber security law to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday. Only that they forgot to mention the party’s senators also voted for it in the upper chamber of the Parliament last week. “In my opinion, the Government’s new attempt to allow secret services, Interior Ministry or National Defense Ministry to set their heel upon citizen’s private life represents a serious breach of democracy and of the Romanian citizens’ fundamental rights and freedom,” Liberal first vice-president Ludovic Orban said. He argued the cyber security law comes in line with other controversial laws such as Big brother and Pre-Pay phone cards ones, which have been ruled as unconstitutional.

Orban, who is also the leader of Liberal deputies, was asked if their move does not contradict their colleagues in Senate who actually voted in favor of the law. “We are not accusing each other by any means. We contacted most of the Liberal senators. We explained them that we, the deputies, could not cast our vote on this draft as the Chamber of Deputies tacitly passed it. But it is our right now to address the Constitutional Court on this matter,”Orban explained.
