Liberals table bill to expose former Securitate staff. SRI, SIE asked to disclose archives

Liberals tabled a draft law compelling institutions to disclose archives with documents related to officers and collaborators of former Securitate political police and to give them to CNSAS (the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives). The bill was filed by the National Liberal Party MP Dan Cristian Popescu.

In 60 days after the law is published in the Official Gazette, the institutions that hold in their own archives documents related to officers, informers and collaborators of the former Romanian communist secret police, Securitate, will proceed with disclosing them and send them to CNSAS,” reads the bill. The initiator explained that all staff of the former Securitate during March 6, 1945-December 22, 1989 should be disclosed.

According to Popescu, the bill eyes as disclosing all the files of the ex-communist secret service which are currently in the archives of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) and Defense Ministry, but that haven’t been delivered to CNSAS.

The Liberal claims that although a great part of the former communist intelligence agents’ files have been handed over to CNSAS, there are still about 100,000 files regarding the former Securitate staff in the SRI and SIE archives.

The initiator argues that releasing these files would have a positive impact on Romania’s image among its international partners from EU and NATO.
