Liviu Dragnea: There is no reason for the Gov’t to resign. The target of protests was and will remain PSD

Social-democrat leader Liviu Dragnea said on Monday, after the Joint Meeting of PSD parliamentary groups, that the Social Democrats MPs still support Grindeanu government and there is no reason for the executive to resign.

“We had a meeting with the joint groups, the joint groups have expressed unequivocal support for the Grindeanu cabinet,” Dragnea said.

“We’ll see what happens in the coming days, the government has no reason to resign,” said Dragnea, asked how will be managed street protests if they continue.

“I repeat what I said earlier. I think a debate is needed, not necessarily in Parliament, maybe the Academy will accept to take part, foreign experts to get involved, the magistrates associations and any other specialists in the field, because I do not think such an analysis would be wrong. A serious reflection and debate is needed, of course, to bring arguments and not screams,” Dragnea said.

“I continue to call for calm. What I was afraid it would happen, it happened. Last night a group of disgruntled people gathered at Cotroceni Palace and there can be a snowball,” Dragnea said, when asked about how to handle the situation if protests will continue.

Asked about some voices which argue that the protesters were coordinated from behind by someone from the opposition, Dragnea explained he did not want to “open these subjects now, but that he will discuss them with his colleagues, soon.”

“The target was and remains PSD, immediately after the presidential election, this is the essential target for President Iohannis, who wants all the power in Romania,” Liviu Dragnea said.

Pro-government and anti-Iohannis protests announced in Vaslui and Pitesti

In Vaslui and Pitesti the PSD supporters are invited to participate in rallies to support the government and to protest against President Iohannis.

The PSD Vaslui leader, Dumitru Buzatu, said on Monday that the county is preparing to organize a rally to support the Government to which 10,000 people could attend. “Now, some opponents of the Government are having a political rally and we see clearly its initial purpose. This manifestation of force cannot be weighed against the elections, therefore we are considering a rally in Vaslui, to which 10,000 people could participate. If the political battle will continue in this way, coherence should be ensured,” Dumitru Buzatu said.

In Arges too, a protest against President Iohannis has been convened for Monday through a social network. The event, launched under the name “Argeş no longer wants Iohannis”, would take place starting at 17.00h Vasile Milea Square downtown Pitesti.
