Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, requested his Romanian counterpart, Teodor Melescanu, during his Tuesday meeting, to ignore the court rulings and for the intervention of the Romanian state in Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says, quoted by ziare.com.
“Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu’s meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, took place at the express request of the Romanian side, given that the Hungarian side has maintained a non-constructive attitude, and for discouraging the constant provocations from the Hungarian side. During the meeting, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called for the judgments of the judiciary to be ignored and the Romanian state to intervene in justice,” a Foreign Ministry (MAE) release on Wednesday reads.
According to the same source, Teodor Melescanu reminded his Hungarian counterpart that “in a democratic state, with a functioning state and respecting the European values and implicitly the principle of the separation of powers in the state, Government intervention in Justice is not acceptable.” Also, the Romanian Minister has urged Hungarian officials to avoid any provocations in the future for Romania.
MAE informed Tuesday that the two officials met on the margins of the informal meeting of foreign ministers of OSCE countries, in Strbske Pleso, Slovakia.
“During this meeting, Minister Teodor Melescanu conveyed to his Hungarian counterpart an appeal to moderation and restraint in the public statements of officials in Budapest, showing that lately these statements have artificially heated the Romano-Hungarian dialogue,” a press release informed.
