The Deputy of the Moldovan “ŞOR” Party, Marina Tauber, was detained at the Chisinau International Airport while trying to leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova, according to the announcement of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Moldova. The ŞOR party was the organizer of the anti-Maia Sandu protests organized since February in the Republic of Moldova.
Marina Tauber is accused of knowingly accepting the financing of the “ŞOR” Party from an organized criminal group, as well as for falsifying the report on the financial management of the group for the first semester of the current year, with the intention of hiding the volume of accumulated financial means and the volume means used, states Deschide.md, quoted by Mews.ro.
“This morning, Marina Tauber was detained at Chisinau International Airport en route to Tel Aviv, Israel via Istanbul, Turkey. The detention was based on the order of the prosecutor from the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, also issued today, on the grounds that the accused violated the conditions stipulated by the preventive measures applied in her regard“, the statement of the prosecutor’s office states.
On April 28, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office filed a motion with the investigating judge to replace the preventive measure of provisional release under judicial control with preventive detention on the grounds that Tauber violated the conditions of the preventive measure. Also on Friday, April 28, the accused’s lawyer received a copy of the action. On April 29, 2023, Tauber requested that the court hearing be postponed so that he could travel to Israel.
Considering that the accused has already violated several times the conditions imposed by the judges, the prosecutors ordered the detention of the accused at the Airport because there is a considerable risk that the accused will evade the criminal investigation body.
On Monday morning, Tauber declared, in a recording posted on his Facebook account, that he intends to leave the Republic of Moldova for medical purposes. She stated that she would return to the country on May 4. Tauber also said that he learned about the intention of the prosecutors to request in court his return to custody.
Since the summer of 2022, pro-Russian opposition led by SOR party have been staging protests in R. of Moldova, with the demonstrators accusing the authorities of not being able to deal with the economic crisis and the drop in living standards.
During a new protest planned in Chisinau on May 7, the opposition party Şor will demand the organization of early elections for the parliament of the Republic of Moldova, as well as presidential elections, the leader of the party, Ilan Şor, said on Friday in an interview for the Russia- 24.
The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova is controlled by the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party. Earlier, the country’s president, Maia Sandu, announced the danger of a coup involving opposition forces and called for additional powers to be given to special services and other law enforcement agencies. Opposition television channels were banned in the country and dozens of activists opposed to the government were arrested. Criminal cases were opened against the leaders of the Party of Socialists from the Republic of Moldova and Ilan Sor’s party.
