MEP from Romania, part of the delegation that investigates the murder of Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak and of his lover

MEP Monica Macovei is starting an official mission to Slovakia today, September 17, as she is part of the LIBE committee delegation in the European Parliament, which will investigate the murder case of Slovak investigation journalist Jan Kuciak and of his lover, Martina Kušnírová.

The two were shot in February 2018, while the journalist was on the verge of publishing a cross-border investigation about high-level corruption deeds and money laundering.

The LIBE delegation, consisting in four MEPs, will meet Slovakia’s president, prime minister, Interior and Justice ministers, high ranking judiciary and Police officials and the Europol representative in Slovakia.

Monica Macovei will also attend debates with Slovak journalists and several NGOs that endorse the anti-corruption fight.

The report of the mission will be debated within the European Parliament. The mission is part of a wider check over the way investigation journalists are protected in Europe, Digi 24 reports.
