Metro line from Baneasa to Otopeni in doubt

The metro line to the Otopeni Airport might stop much before the airport. The new minister of Transport, Cătălin Drulă told Hotnews that the completion of the metro line linking Baneasa Shopping Center, Tokyo station to Henri Coanda/Otopeni Airport makes no sense from the economic point of view, as it is neither considering the development plans of the airport.

The European Commission agreed to finance only 6 of 14 kilometers, the distance of the metro line 6, meaning from 1 Mai and Tokyo tube stations. The work, auctioned since 2019, is not concluded yet.

“The vision in the ministry now is that one arrives from his/her trip at the new terminal, a EUR 800m-investment, one takes a bus inside the airport for about 3 km, gets down in a metro station and has a ride of 35 minutes with 14 stops till the arrival at the Northern Station. It is not understood from this scenario why, if one arrives to this point, one cannot take the train, with a ride lasting 20 minutes and no stops up to the Northern Station. I think we have to look at the M6 metro line from Baneasa to Otopeni very seriously. The European Commission refused to finance this section and I believe those resources must redirected to the other project within the subway network“, the minister argued.
