Mircea Geoană Resigns as NATO Deputy Chief, Prepares for Presidential Run

NATO announced, on Tuesday, the resignation of Mircea Geoană from the position of Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, which he has held since 2019.
On Tuesday, 3 September 2024, Mircea Geoană notified the Secretary General that he will step down as NATO Deputy Secretary General (DSG) on 10 September, with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg accepting the resignation, thanking Geoană for his service.

“Mircea has served NATO for nearly five years. His focus on technology and emerging security challenges has been critical to driving innovation in the Alliance. He is a true transatlanticist and his work with partners has greatly benefitted NATO. I wish him all the best for the future,” said Stoltenberg, according to a NATO press release.

Boris Ruge, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy (PASP), will serve as Acting Deputy Secretary General until a successor is appointed.

Geoană, who is preparing to run again for the Presidency, posted an announcement on Facebook in which he says that the NATO mandate was the honor of his life, without making any reference to candidacy.

“Being in the leadership of NATO has been the honor of my life. I thank Secretary General Stoltenberg for his trust and friendship. Together, in the last 5 years, we have been through many difficult times, but we have also shared countless achievements with our outstanding team. As I move into a new chapter, I look back with pride on my memorable time in the service of the most important Alliance in history.
Mircea Geoană is the first Romanian to fill this position and the first Deputy Secretary General from a country that joined the Alliance after the end of the Cold War,” reads his Facebook post.

Mircea Geoană (66 years old) announced on August 25, on Digi 24, regarding the presidential candidacy, that on a personal level his decision has been made, but he has to wait a few more days.
“I will announce the decision when I finish my mandate at NATO”, he emphasized.
Geoană was the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) from 2005 to 2010, and in 2009 he was the party’s candidate for the position of president of Romania. He lost the race at the limit in front of Traian Băsescu.
Mircea Geoană was also president of the Romanian Senate from December 2008 to November 2011, senator, former Ambassador of Romania to the USA and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Năstase Government.
Mircea Geoană is the president of the Aspen Romania Institute, a non-profit, apolitical association. The Institute’s mission is to promote an informed and critical dialogue on various topics of interest to Romanian society.
