Mircea Geoana’s former residence to be auctioned. Starting price: EUR 730,000

The government decided to put out for auction the protocol villa where former social-democrat Mircea Geoana lived for years. The residence is situated downtown Bucharest. The starting price for the auction to take place in 2015 is EUR 730,000. The villa has a surface of 271 square metres and 550 square metres of yard.

The decision comes after Geoana was ousted from the social-democratic party (PSD) on November 22 and resigned from the position of Prime Minister’s High Representative. At the beginning of December, Geoana has notified the RA-APPS (the national agency for administrating state domains and protocol) he is about to move and that he would give up the renting contract. Geoana claimed he was paying EUR 3,000 per month as rent.

Mircea Geoana served as Senate Speaker from December 20, 2008 until he was revoked on November 23, 2011. From 21 April 2005 until 21 February 2010 he was the head of PSD. He was the candidate of the party for the position of President of Romania in the 2009 presidential election. He was dismissed from PSD following the refusal to resign as Senate Speaker on 22 November 2011 but rejoined the party in late 2012.

From December 28, 2000 to December 28, 2004, Geoana was Foreign Minister in the government of led by social-democrat Adrian Nastase. In 2001, Geoana was appointed the chairman of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In 2004, during the local government elections in Romania, he ran for Mayor of Bucharest, but lost to Traian B?sescu of the Democratic Party. A career diplomat, from 1996 to 2000 Geoana served as Romania’s ambassador to the United States. At the time, he was the youngest ambassador in Romania’s diplomatic corps. Geoana was elected PSD president by the party’s congress on April 25, 2005 to replace Ion Iliescu. He led PSD until February 2010.

On November 22, after three hours of discussions the PSD standing committee decided to oust Geoana from the party by 50 votes to 5. Mircea Geoana accused current leader and PM Victor Ponta of staging ‘the execution’ and had tough words against his party leader, seen by him as Ion Iliescu’s puppet.

“PSD, as long as it is run by the shadows of Iliescu and Nastase, has no chance to be reformed. They’ve installed a puppet to rule the party, a man with no character and who acts like a tyrant. Mr. Iliescu is the bad omen for the party. He can’t put aside his antipathy against me and against the leaders that followed him to rule the party,” Geoana said at the time.
