PM Victor Ponta said on Monday that the Social Democrat Party (PSD) delegation would submit a different electoral system proposal at consultations with President Iohannis on Wednesday. More precisely, PSD wants a Parliament with 300 deputies and maximum 100-110 senators.
As for the elections organized in Diaspora, the ruling party thinks the Permanent Electoral Authority should be in charge of them. The Social Democrats also believe that the elections setup should stipulate a certain number of persons that would cast their votes in each country.
“For the local elections, PSD options is to go on with the present voting system,” Ponta mentioned.
As for the Liberals, vice-president Mihai Voicu said that they favor returning to the two-round elections of the mayors and of the county council leaders.
Voicu said that the National Liberal Party is supporting a significant decrease of the MPs number, yet they did not mention any specific figure.
Liberals are also in favor of mail voting for the Romanians living abroad, underling that all electoral laws must be adopted in Parliament b by May 5, so that they could be enforced according to the Constitutional Court’s ruling.
Regarding the financing of the parties’ electoral campaigns, PNL vice-president said the campaign expenses should be borne by the state budget, in order to stop political corruption expressed by controversial campaign sponsorships.
