Romania has the vocation of an important player in international multilateral relations, says Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, who participates these days to the General Assembly of the United Nations.
“The first day at the United Nations, a busy day concluded with the conviction that Romania has the vocation of an important player in multilateral international relations. I attended the opening of the General Assembly, the leaders meeting organized by US President Barack Obama on the global crisis of refugees and the conference on Open Government hosted by France and South Africa. In the margins of the UN, I met with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, with the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö, President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El Sossi and with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as well as the UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim,” Ciolos wrote on Facebook.
Dacian Cioloş is since Tuesday in New York to attend the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.
PM Ciolos attends refugees summit in NY, pleads for shared responsibility
Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos stressed on Tuesday, in New York, that Romania fully recognizes the shared responsibility for managing large influx of refugees, adding there’s need for a series of urgent measures to solve this crisis.
“Romania fully recognizes the shared responsibility to manage the influx of refugees. There are various possibilities, resources and policies to meet this challenge, as there are different forms to contribute to the joint efforts of the international community. In this context, Romania has gradually increased its contribution on several fronts in the humanitarian field, both as a donor and as a resettlement country. Through its efforts, Romania has sought to alleviate the humanitarian pressure by providing financial contributions to the international humanitarian organizations, such as UN High Commissariat for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), UN agency for Aid to Palestinian refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the world food Programme,” the Prime Minister said in his speech delivered at the leaders’ summit on the global crisis of refugees, organized by the US along with Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, Mexico and Sweden which took place in New York on Tuesday, Agerpres informs.
Ciolos added that Romania has granted bilateral humanitarian aid to Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan, underscoring that our country has provided ‘temporary shelter’ for the refugees in the Emergency Transit Centre located in Timisoara.
More refugees in Romania?
US officials mentioned at the UN that seven states, among them Romania, have agreed to get at least ten times more refugees than in 2015, 20minutes.fr reports.
Romania, Portugal, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, France and Luxembourg have agreed, according to the US officials, to receive, according to the European redistribution scheme or separately, at least ten times more refugees than in 2015.
US President Barack Obama stated, at the debate of the UN General Assembly that dozens of states have agreed to receive some 360,000 refugees during 2017, double against the current levels.
Romanian Premier meets Canadian counterpart on visa issues
On the side-lines of the ongoing 71st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Romanian PM Dacian Ciolos met Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau to discuss mainly visa liberalisation for Romanian nationals travelling to Canada.
The sources also said the two prime ministers noticed the outlook is good for the visa requirements on Romanian nationals travelling to Canada to be lifted in the near future.
They added that Ciolos and Trudeau also discussed Canada’s contribution to making operational the decisions of the 2016 Warsaw Summit of NATO about strengthening NATO’s eastern side, particularly in the Black Sea area.
