The National Anti-Corruption Strategy for 2016-2020 is discussed at Victoria Palace on Tuesday with business and civil society representatives.
Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos has said at the launch of the debates, there are cases where corruption, coupled with indifference, can kill, literally. He recalled the recent health scandals. The prime minister stressed that fighting corruption is the responsibility of each Romanian. The prime minister also stressed that, by implementing this strategy, the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) could be eliminated, digi24.ro reports.
“I saw the carelessness and negligence at the Hospital for Burns,” he said, recalling the hospital where a doctor had filmed a patient having larvae in wounds.
Dacian Cioloş said that there are problems in education, where corruption and indifference can kill ‘socially’.
“The fight against corruption is not limited to the state institutions’ fight,” said the Premier. He added that the fight against corruption begins with sound management of the institutions, with the transparency of decisions.
Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos stressed that the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy will eliminate any need for external warnings and recalled the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. The prime minister said that this strategy will help us prove Romania no longer needs the CVM, not because of ‘national pride’ but because the society by itself has recovered and no longer needs it.
“Putting this strategy in practice is important not only in terms of our recovery as a society, it will contribute significantly and positively to the way we are perceived abroad. Keep in mind that we still have the CVM, disputed in Romania – whether the mechanism should be kept or not. The strategy will eliminate any need to be alerted from abroad for things absolutely obvious to us, to which we close our eyes, and to a situation when we no longer need the CVM,” Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said.
The draft proposed by the Ministry of Justice is on public debate and is to be adopted by the Government.
The strategy aims to implement standards of integrity and stability of the anti-corruption legal and institutional framework.
According to the draft, the Ministry of Justice undertakes to submit next year, an interim report on progress and, if necessary, proposals to update the National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
The event is also attended by Justice Minister Raluca Pruna and by Deputy PM Vasile Dancu.
