Postal vote in store for presidential election

Romanians might vote in advance throughout seven days or by postal vote during the presidential election at the end of this year. The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) will present an emergency ordinance draft to included these amendments to the Government next week.

AEP President, Constantin-Florin Mituleţu-Buică argued that simplification of the procedures across polling stations abroad is also considered.

The vote in advance will be held throughout seven days across the diplomatic missions and consulates. The simplification of the voting procedure at the polling stations abroad is referring to introducing the digital signature to avoid handwriting when filling in every section. The voter will sign at the end through an electronic device.

The AEP head said the amendments would become operational before the presidential elections due this autumn.

The national electoral watchdog plans to conclude the final version of the GEO draft next week so that the Gov’t could adopt it as soon as possible.

The intended measures on a revised voting procedure in Diaspora are meant to address the defaults encountered during EP elections at the end of May, that prompted queuing Romanians to protest over incapacity to exert their right to vote.
