President Klaus Iohannis delivered a National Day speech on Friday at the reception held at Cotroceni Palace, where he stated that 2024 will be a decisive year for shaping Romania’s future. “It will be a solid exercise of our democratic maturity to participate in all rounds of elections in a year that marks three and a half decades since the December 1989 Revolution,” emphasized the president.
“We are all aware that there is still much to be done in Romania, and the long-delayed changes must continue at a faster pace. Supporting investments, strengthening the capacity of institutions to serve citizens’ interests, infrastructure development, healthcare services consolidation, and public administration modernization are objectives that have begun to be addressed, but we have not yet reached our goals. In recent years, numerous major projects have been initiated, including in the energy sector, where the foundations for using green technologies to significantly reduce dependence on imported gas have been laid, a vital aspect in the current geopolitical situation. Reforms of public systems have been initiated; we have new education laws, ongoing digitalization of administration, and resources secured for the modernization of the Army in an extremely challenging context. All these efforts must be continued,” stated the head of state at Cotroceni Palace during the reception organized for Romania’s National Day.
He further mentioned that 2024 will be a crucial year for determining how Romania will look in the future. “This is because we will have European Parliament elections, where we will designate those who make our voice heard in the European Union; we will have local elections, which determine the evolution of the communities we live in; parliamentary elections, which will shape the governing majority, and presidential elections, which will indicate the choice of Romanians for the highest office in the state,” added Iohannis.
President Klaus Iohannis emphasized that the election results will set the course Romania will take in the coming years. “It will be a solid exercise of our democratic maturity to participate in all rounds of elections in a year that marks three and a half decades since the December 1989 Revolution. Let us not forget that the road to freedom and democracy was long and arduous and involved enormous sacrifices from many generations. Thanks to them, we have the fundamental right today to exercise our vote, the only democratic instrument through which we decide the course of our country. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect the future of the nation and, at the same time, to remain vigilant in the face of extremist streams that, if we are not careful enough, can become real threats to the basic principles of our society and our value system,” the Romanian President pointed out.
