President Iohannis asks PM Dancila to nominate another EU Commissioner, accuses her of violating the Constitution

President Klaus Iohannis has said that, by refusing to come to Cotroceni for consultations on the EU Commissioner topic, PM Viorica Dancila has patently violated the Constitution and proved a lack of political responsibility. The head of state has invited the premier for talks again, while calling her to nominate another person for the position in Brussels.

On Tuesday, the Executive Committee of the ruling Social Democrat Party had unanimously voted Dan Nica to be the proposal for European Commissioner, upon the premier’s personal suggestion, and also forwarded a back-up third option, Gabriela Ciot, secretary of state within the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

PM Dancila has patently violated the Constitution and she is seriously affecting Romania’s credibility. Mrs. Viorica Dancila continues to prove us all that she doesn’t belong anymore at the helm of the Government. Her denial to talk today with the Romanian President on a topic that refers to our country’s reputation is a gross violation of the Constitution. The premier’s move is also showing dilettantism and lack of political responsibility. The prime-minister’s stubbornness to endorse her friends for a position within EU, despite all obvious integrity issues, has already led to a huge failure and risks causing significant damage to Romania, including losing the Transport portfolio”, reads a Presidency’s press statement.

Klaus Iohannis has urged Dancila to stop risking the country’s credibility for petty party interests.
“I publicly warn Mrs. Dancila: stop risking the country’s credibility for petty party interests! Your government has already harmed Romania too much, please, stop! Don’t embarrass Romania with all the unprofessional people with integrity issues that you insist in nominating both in the Government and also for major positions of the European Union!” reads the President’s statement.

The head of state has also asked PM to eventually come for talks at Cotroceni Palace.

“I ask the premier again to observe the Constitution and the national laws and make another nomination for the European Commissioner, only following consulting with the Romanian President and after the Parliament’s go-ahead”, Iohannis further highlighted.

PM’s retort: The height of hypocrisy

“This is the height of hypocrisy, that president Iohannis tells us about breaking the Constitution. The same Klaus Iohannis who is trampling he fundamental law  by refusing to name interim ministers, by deliberately ignoring the Constitutional Court’s ruling,” PM Dancila replied.
