President Iohannis, Romanian Gov’t call on political forces in R. of Moldova to observe rule of law. Parliament dissolved, President Dodon suspended

President Klaus Iohannis has addressed on Sunday a message to all political forces in the Republic of Moldova for respect of democracy and the rule of law.

The appeal comes in the context of the political situation in the Republic of Moldova.

“Faced with recent political developments in the Republic of Moldova, the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, addresses all political forces in this country a firm appeal for respect for democracy and the rule of law. The stability of the Republic of Moldova is essential for the European path of the country, committed to carrying out a comprehensive reform process, including in the rule of law and good governance fields, in line with its commitment to the European Union, based on the Association Agreement,” reads a press release issued by the Presidential Administration on Sunday.

The Romanian Government has also called on all political forces in the Republic of Moldova to respect the democratic process and the will of the citizens expressed through the vote in the February 2019 elections.

Chaos in neighbouring Moldova. President Dodon – suspended, dissolution of Parliament

A new day of chaos in Republic of Moldova on Sunday, a country known for political instability, digi24.ro reports.

The Constitutional Court has suspended President Igor Dodon and approved the dissolution of Parliament.

The decision was made after he ignored the institution’s decisions and did not dissolve the Parliament, although the Parliament had not elected a government in the time stipulated by the law. Saturday evening, the legislature voted a new prime minister, Maia Sandu, a new Executive and a resolution declaring the Republic of Moldova a “captured state”. However, Constitutional Court of Moldova (CCM) has invalidated this government.

Maia Sandu, appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova on Saturday, but later invalidated by the Constitutional Court, delivered a speech on Sunday to tell the public servants that the new Government wants to release the state institutions from political control and asked for their support during the period for transfer of power.

Thousands join rally

Thousands of people attended a large-scale rally in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau, the capital of R. of Moldova, requesting the observing of the decisions of the Constitutional Court and calling for early parliamentary and presidential elections, Unimedia and Ziarul de Gardă inform.

Protesters were brought to Chisinau on Sunday with dozens of minibuses and coaches to attend the rally organized by the Democratic Party led by Vladimir Plahotniuc.

A stage with the symbols of the Democratic Party is located in the Great National Assembly Square.

At the end of the rally, the leader of the Democratic Party, Vladimir Plahotniuc, called on supporters to be prepared to organize similar events in the coming days.

Moldovans voted for a new parliament in February. The Socialists got most of the mandates, followed by the Democrats, the ACUM bloc and the Shor party.
