President Iohannis tells young magistrates to resist pressures, politicians are transient

President Klaus Iohannis has told the young National Institute of Magistracy graduates on Tuesday to resist pressures coming from politicians, adding that politicians are only transient.

Iohannis said that judges and prosecutors need to be landmarks of morality in the society.

“Your decisions are important in the social field as well. Do not forget for a single moment about the citizen! Do not forget that justice is to serve the citizen. I encourage you not to take a step back during your mission, however difficult it may be in some situations. If you feel pressure is on you, resist! Do not forget that a politician or another are transient in an office, whereas the law and the constitution are above any political partisanship,” the head of state said during a ceremony at Cotroceni Palace on Tuesday, after the meeting with the new graduates of the National Institute of Magistracy.

President Iohannis congratulated the young graduates and told them: “How good you look, my heart is growing to see so many young people becoming magistrates! I remember very well the day when I signed your decrees and, although I sign a lot of papers, these ones I signed with great pleasure!”

Justice independence and the rule of law are vital – citizens take action when they are in danger

President Klaus Iohannis said justice independence and the rule of law are vital, adding that politicians are not allowed to abandon these principles, otherwise the citizens will take action.

“Justice independence and the rule of law are often used during the political speeches. So often that some politicians may believe they can be used as pretext to make decisions to endanger the very justice independence and the rule of law. When some people forget about these landmarks, the reaction of the society can be firm, proving how important they are. They’re vital! Irrespective of the legitimacy claimed in their actions, politicians have no right to abandon the fundamental principles of democracy. Otherwise, the citizens take action to bring things back on their right way,” President Iohannis said.

The ceremony at Cotroceni Palace was attended by Prosecutor General Augustin Lazar, by the Constitutional Court Chairman Valer Dorneanu, by the Chairman of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) Cristina Tarcea and by the presidential advisers.
