PSD chair Dragnea threatens PM Ciolos with censure motion

The Social Democrat Party chairman Liviu Dragnea announced in Vaslui on Friday that he considered a potential censure motion against Ciolos Government, accusing the prime minister of lying about ‘the negligence in the Tax Code on the real estate taxes for veterans.’

“They said they had been forced to include the articles in the government decision interpreting the Tax Code for it would be a mistake or a negligence in the Tax Code. It’s a lie,” said Dragnea, explaining that the Tax code was very clear when exempting veterans of taxes and refers both to the owned and co-owned properties.

“The public servants from the Ministry of Finances are searching to take money from every Romanian, regardless of his/her social condition and they illegally interpreted and amended an organic law,” PSD chair argued.

Dragnea asked the Government to amend the decision on the veterans’ taxation and to bring to account all those who promoted and endorsed this action that caused “so many disservices and shortcomings to a social category which needs respect.”

In this context, Dragnea threatened again to file a censure motion, informing that he will talk about that with ALDE co-president on Monday.

The Social Democrat chairman’s statements come after PM Dacian Ciolos had warned on Thursday on the veterans topic, saying “he’s got used to some people’s leaving the mined field by clarifying or not certain things in the previous years and by laying them as a burden on the technocrats, for it’s very easy to do that in an electoral year”. PM Ciolos also warned that he would not tolerate this situation anymore.

The premier had previously announced that he would amend by emergency ordinance the Tax Code to correct the regime of facilities for veterans, in the view of “repairing” a mistake made by the Ponta Government and voted in the Parliament.

“I want to clear things up. This Government hasn’t tabled revisions to cut rights and tax facilities or to impose new taxes on the veterans. I was surprised to see we’re being threatened with a censure motion for some provisions of the Tax Code, a code that has been drafted and voted right by the party that is launching these threats. Our Government decision made some clarifications but it could not amend the Tax Code (…) Such populist approaches are beyond any comment. I would have invited the PSD leadership to check who is responsible for the situation on war veterans (…) It’s not the first time this thing is happening, to step on the mines buried by PSD and that PSD asking us why we stepped on these mines and why they exploded,” the premier said while commenting on the veterans topic.
