A vice-president of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) Ecaterina Andronescu (photo) has accused that some mayors in the country would have paid the transport of the protesters who came to join the march in Bucharest on Saturday.
She also said that the protests are ruining Romania’s image abroad, while accrediting the idea that Romania is an unstable and ungovernable country.
“There are messages saying that some mayors- for instance in Roman- have paid the transportation expenses for those who took to the street,” Adronescu told Digi24.
“If people protest for they are discontent, it’s their constitutional right and we must respect it. If somebody wants to show that Romania is ungovernable, then he must take the responsibility for this,” she added.
The SocDem leader opined that protests are sending the message of instability, which is not for the country’s benefit.
“If these demonstrations accredit the idea that there is no stability in Romania, that Romania is ungovernable, everybody will lose,” she concluded.
In retort, the mayor of Roman (a small town in Neamt county), said he was shocked to hear Andronescu’s statement. Moreover, mayor Lucian Micu says he will sue Andronescu and asked her resignation of honour from the senator position.
“Her statement is completely false and we’ll analyse with the city hall’s lawyers the right to sue her for these statements,” Micu stated, adding that if anybody proves he organized any transport to Bucharest, he is willing to resign, but meanwhile he is waiting for Andronescu’s resignation of honour from the senator seat. The mayor says that he cannot understand how Andronescu ‘dared bemire his name and the city with such bullying lies’.
The mayor further said that of the citizens of Roman went to Bucharest to protest it’s because “there are some dirty people in politics”. He told the locals to carry a stiff upper lip in front of those who are offending them, while voicing hope justice will find the truth.
