PSD, PM Ponta make three-year ruling balance sheet, slams Basescu, PDL, hints at Liberals’ twist

The Social Democrat Party on Monday celebrated the assumption of power three years ago following the no confidence vote that toppled the Government led by Mihai Razvan Ungureanu. While PSD came to ruling three years ago next to the Liberal Party, within the Social Liberal Union, now they celebrated alone. PM Ponta presented his party colleagues a balance sheet of USL, while reminding former Liberal partners that they had promised to not team up with the Democrat Liberal Party.

As a matter of fact, PM Ponta said that his party carried out the promises of the USL governing program to have a Liberal President, adding that also the promise that “Basescu and Udrea should be in jail” was partially carried out.

In an event styled “Three years — the beginning of the end of Basescu — MRU — Predoiu regime”, Ponta presented two slides reading “USL has promised: prime minister from PSD, President from PNL” and “USL has promised: Basescu and Udrea in jail — partly done.” He was referring to former president Traian Basescu, former prime minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, former justice minister Catalin Predoiu (now PNL’s nominee for prime minister, after the party withdrew from USL and merged with PDL) and former minister Elena Udrea (Basescu’s political pupil; she is currently under arrest pending trial for several counts of corruption and money laundering).

“I’m very proud I was the one of the 235 members of the Parliament who have voted that censure motion, as I’ll be proud my entire life that I’m one of those who have voted for the then President’s suspension. I haven’t changed my mind, I haven’t become friend with those we have ousted,” said Ponta in the opening of the event.

Previously in the day, during the PSD National Standing Bureau, the prime minister said: ‘We are where we were three years ago. If people have changed their mind in the meantime and are now sharing their time with Mr Ungureanu and Mr Predoiu, Mrs Boagiu, Ialomiteanu (of the Democratic Liberal Party), it is their problem, not ours. We have been consistent and kept our word,’ Ponta said.
