The common plenary sitting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate voted on Wednesday the appointment of Renate Weber as Ombudswoman. Weber is the proposal filed by ruling coalition partners ALDE.
The decision was approved by 209 votes ‘for’.
Opposition parties PNL and USR supported UDMR candidate Peter Eckstein Kovacs for Ombudsman, whereas PMP supported attorney Catalin Voinea Mic, digi24.ro reports.
After being proposed by ALDE for this position, Renate Weber has resigned from the party led by Calin Popescu Tariceanu.
Former Ombudsman Victor Ciorbea sent a letter on Monday to the Speakers of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, Marcel Ciolacu and Calin Popescu Tariceanu, informing them that his term as Ombudsman has come to an end, according to a release from the institution.
Law no. 35/1997 on the organization and functioning of the institution of Ombudsman provides that “the Ombudsman is appointed for a term of 5 years by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, in common session. The Ombudsman’s term may be renewed only once.”
