Romania Acquires 54 American Abrams Tanks in Strategic Defense Move

U.S. Embassy to Romania announced today the sale of 54 M1A2 SEPv3 Main Battle Tanks from the United States to Romania, as part of a larger package of military equipment and services. The M1A2 SEPv3 is the latest upgraded version of the Abrams main battle tank, which offers enhanced protection, survivability, lethality, and network capability. The tanks are the same variant used by the United States and will enhance Romania’s interoperability with the U.S. and other NATO allies, especially on the eastern flank of the alliance.

Ambassador Kavalec praised the high standards of security cooperation between the U.S. and Romania, and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Romania’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She also emphasized the value that the U.S. places on the strategic partnership and friendship with Romania, which is based on shared values and interests.

This sale demonstrates the strength and vitality of our bilateral relationship, as well as our mutual dedication to regional stability and security,” Ambassador Kavalec said. “The M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams will provide Romania with a modern and reliable platform to deter aggression and defend its borders. They will also contribute to NATO’s collective defense and enhance our ability to operate together effectively.”

In accordance with U.S. law, the Abrams sale was notified to U.S. Congress with an estimated total program cost of $2.53 billion dollars, but the actual value of the agreement is significantly less. The initial deal is valued at approximately €1 billion ($1.07 billion). The sale is subject to approval by the U.S. Congress, as well as the completion of contractual negotiations. We expressed our confidence that both sides will work diligently to finalize the deal as soon as possible.
