Romanian Intelligence Service confirms cyber attacks on national public institutions’ websites

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) unveiled on Friday that Romanian public institutions’ websites have been submitted to cyber attacks starting mid December 2014. According to the quoted source, the cyber attacks promoted radical Islamist anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian messages, with the Romanian Patriarchy website also being targeted.

“In Romania cyber attacks have been registered on websites of universities and public administration institutions since mid December last year. Radical Islamist, anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian messages have been promoted,” SRI spokesperson, Sorin Sava told a press release.

The Intelligence Service official also mentioned that SECURITY CREWZ hackers launched defacement-type cyber attacks on several public and private Romanian institutions’ websites during January 9-12, 2015.

“These attacks affected the integrity and availability of the content, promoting pro-Caliphate ideological messages (…) A similar aggression on January 14, claimed this time by the members of Tunisian hacker group “FallaGa Team — Tunisian Cyber Resistance”, replaced the content of some websites owned by the Romanian Patriarchy with pro-Muslim ideological messages, targeted against the French state”, SRI press release also reads.

SRI spokesperson says the websites of those public institutions affected by the cyber attacks are now restored.

“This context points out the need of minimum cyber security standards for the public and state bodies (…),” the Romanian Intelligence Service underlines, mentioning that the above-mentioned cyber attacks have not affected national interest cyber infrastructures so far.
