Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureşan says in a Facebook post that Romania and Italy are the only EU states that have sent no official nominations for the European Commissioner, while adding that PM Dancila’s unofficial proposals, Rovana Plumb and Dan Nica, are unacceptable at European level.
Moreover, it seems that President Iohannis himself has asked the premier to not propose Nica and Plumb for the EC Commissioner position, arguing it is “a bad proposal”.
“The only EU member states that have not yet sent official proposals for the EC Commissioner position are Italy, that has no government, and Romania, which has the Dăncilă Government. Until this moment 25 members of the European Union have officially sent their candidates for the European Commissioner, have publicly announced them and these candidates have been assumed by the prime ministers of those countries”, Siegfried Mureşan said, adding that the future European Commission will never accept the current proposals advanced by the Romanian Government.
“Why hasn’t Viorica Dăncilă publicly announced any nomination? Because she knows these two proposals are weak, and neither Rovana Plumb, nor Dan Nica will ever become commissioners. Viorica Dăncilă knew from the very beginning there will be insurmountable issues to her both nominations. Why has she made these proposals in the first place? To satisfy certain groups of interest in PSD. Why hasn’t Viorica Dăncilă consulted on this issue with President Iohannis, who is more credible than her on the foreign affairs? Because she doesn’t want Romania gets an important portfolio, she only wants to satisfy some groups of interest in the party”, the PNL MEP added.
President Iohannis has revealed in an informal discussion with the journalists at Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday that PM Viorica Dăncilă had called him announcing she wanted to propose Rovana Plumb as EC Commissioner and the head of state had told her “it’s a bad proposal”, recommending the premier to not send it to Brussels.
After this discussion, the prime minister has called President Iohannis again to inform him she had already sent to Ursula von der Leyen the names of Rovana Plumb and Dan Nica as Romania’s nominations for the EC Commissioner.
The head of state replied to her that, if these nominations, which are very bad, are rejected, Romania will lose the Transports portfolio that our country is eyeing within the European Commission, and “we’ll have a serious issue”.
