PM Viorica Dancila has announced at the beginning of the Government sitting on Wednesday that she will send a letter to the European Commission president, Jean Claude Juncker, asking for details about the EC’s 2012 note which contained names of some officials with legal problems.
“The document was asking information about cases in courts and there were even names. I asked the Justice minister to come up with an analysis of the requests that the European Commission sent to the Justice Ministry, and if there have been such requests during 2012-2018. Today I received the documents from the Justice minister and they re-confirm that there have been such practices,” the premier said.
Dancila says she will ask the EC President for further details.
“I decided to send a letter to the European Commission president today, asking for details related to the these aspects which seems to me totally inappropriate and which are not in compliance with what CVM means. It’s important to clarify these things and to start from a natural cooperation,” the prime minister added.
Media close to the ruling party has released the information this week that a Cooperation and Verification Mechanism-related note issued by the EC on October 10, 2012, would have asked the Romanian authorities (more precisely the Justice Ministry) to report the situation and to set the steps to be taken in well-known corruption cases, while also mentioning a few names of such people: Gheorghe Copos, Adrian Năstase, Şerban Brădişteanu, Ion Dumitru, Decebal Traian Remeş, Dan Voiculescu, George Becali, Cătălin Voicu, Tudor Chiuariu.
However, the former Justice minister at that time, Mona Pivniceru, explained on November 8, 2012 that the EC requirements in that document couldn’t be considered “an interference” in the judiciary act, for the European officials had asked to see what is the stage of the actions taken by Romania in meeting the CVM criteria
The EC Representation in Bucharest announced a day ago it won’t comment on the documents released in the media “from unofficial sources” , referring to the above-mentioned note dating back in 2012.
