Romanian officials on Friday reacted in the case of former Moldovan premier’s detention.
President Klaus Iohannis informed he is looking at the situation in R. Moldova ‘narrowly’, expressing hope that these events should not lead to a shift in the pro-European option of the Moldova’s rulers.
“I am narrowly watching the situation in Republic of Moldova and I hope the latest events in Chisinau should not lead to a shift in the pro-European option of Moldova’s rulers. I encourage the Government and the Parliament to get over these difficulties, which climaxed with yesterday’s events (ex-PM Vlad Filat’s arrest), and to preserve the direction towards the Western values. I strongly believe that Republic of Moldova can fulfill its destiny only inside the European Union,” Iohannis wrote in a Facebook post.
In his turn, Romanian Foreign Affairs minister, Bogdan Aurescu said that “it’s extremely important” that the government in Chisinau should be stable.
“I wouldn’t comment the case (…) What it’s extremely important is that the Moldovan Government should maintain stability and the ruling coalition to keep staying on this pro-European track, clearly revealed by the Moldovan citizens’ votes sine November last year,” Aurescu told Agerpres.
We remind our readers that the Moldovan former premier Vlad Filat, also leader of the Moldovan Liberal Democrat Party has been taken into custody for 72 hours on Thursday evening, after the Parliament in Chisinau stripped him of the parliamentary immunity so that he could be detained for his alleged involvement in defrauding the Savings Bank based in Republic of Moldova.
Filat has been accusing there is a “conspiracy” against him staged by the leaders of the pro-Russian parties together with the former communist president Vladimir Voronin, who aim at coming into power and divert Moldova from its European path.
On the other hand, the incumbent premier and president of the republic on Friday initiated the procedures of removing the head of the Moldovan National Anti-corruption Center, Viorel Chetraru for deficiently managing the country’s anti-corruption campaign and also for the poor results in the case of the Savings Bank defrauding Bank, where ex-PM Filat is investigated.
