Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is among the recipients of the Atlantic Council’s prestigious annual awards, the Distinguished Leadership Awards, considered the “Washington Oscars.”

The Atlantic Council, one of the world’s leading think tanks, today announced the recipients of its 2024 Leadership Awards, which will be presented on May 8 during a gala in Washington, DC.

Klaus Iohannis will receive an award for his “remarkable career, exemplary leadership of Romania and for his role in transatlantic and European leadership,” according to a press release from the organization.

The award will be presented to him by Stephen J. Hadley, Chair of the Atlantic Council’s International Advisory Committee and former US National Security Advisor.

The Atlantic Council will also honor Gina M. Raimondo, US Secretary of Commerce, recognized for her outstanding tenure in US government and for being the first woman to become governor of the state of Rhode Island.

Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and head of U.S. European Command, will receive an award for his more than 35-year career in the U.S. military.

Academy Award-winning actress and producer Michelle Yeoh will be honored for her talent and for being an Asian person to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. She is also an ambassador of the United Nations Development Program and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

“The recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Leadership Awards are outstanding representatives of global leaders who, throughout their lives and careers, have contributed to a better world. By honoring them, we hope to inspire others to follow their lead at a time when the world is in such dire need of leaders,” said Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council.
