Romanians in the UK urged to report potential discriminating incidents

The Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MAE) assures Romanians living in the UK of the authorities’ support, while urging them to inform the British official institutions and the Romanian Embassy in London on potential discriminating actions against EU citizens following Brexit referendum. The ministry also announced that a new Romania’s general consulate in Manchester would be operational soon.

MAE told a press release on Tuesday that the result of the June 23 referendum in the UK doesn’t prompt any legal effects on the consular activities provided by the Romanian embassy in London in the interest of the Romanian local community.

The Romanian ministry says that no extra rise has been reported in the consular assistance requests after the referendum.

Related to the signals that the referendum results stir tensions and isolated reactions against EU citizens in the UK, which might be discriminating, MAE urges the Romanian citizens who know such incidents to inform both the British authorities and also the Romania’s Embassy in London.

The foreign ministry also reminds that further details on the consular procedures are available through the Center of Contact and Support of the Romanian Citizens Abroad. The center has a portal www.informatiiconsulare.ro, un Call-Center and a Mail-Center (Phone call-center: +44 20 76027328; +44 20 76029833; +44 20 76036694; +44 20 76025193 / Mail-Center : contact@informatiiconsulare.ro).
