Romanians prefer republic to monarchy, survey shows

Romanians are standing to the republic as ruling (58.2 percent), while 20.4 percent would opt for monarchy, 13.8 percent are undecided and 7.7 percent did not know or did not answer, an INSCOP survey shows. Most of those who favor the republic (29.5 percent) consider that things would have gone well in Romania if monarchy had been embraced immediately after 1989.

The poll also reveals that the republic seems to be more popular among older persons: 50 percent of persons aged 18 to 30 would opt for the republic, 59.4 percent of the 31-50 age group and 61.3 percent of people over 50 prefer the republic.

The option for monarchy does not depend too much on the age. 21.4 percent of those between 18 and 30 years old would vote for the monarchy, 18.9 percent of the persons aged 31 to 50 and 20.9 percent of those over 50 favor monarchy.

“Indecision seems to rather oppose to the republicanism from the point of view of age group distribution. The older people are the less undecided they get. 18.1 percent of those aged between 18 and 30 are undecided when it comes to choose between republic and monarchy. 14.4 percent of the persons of 31 to 50 years old are undecided, while only 11.1 percent of the people over 50 have this dilemma”, the survey concludes.
