Ruling coalition give up controversial bill compelling adult children to pay pensions to their parents

The Standing Bureau of the Senate (Romanian Parliament’s upper chamber) has decided to withdraw from the parliamentary procedure the draft law compelling adult children to financially support their parents, grandparents or great grandparents, upon the request of the initiators.

PSD senator and vice-president of the Senate, Nicolae Moga, explained that withdrawal request had been filed by the PSD deputy Dumitru Gherman and by the initiators.

“The law of the gratitude among generations” bill had been filed to the Senate by 74 PSD and ALDE MPs, among whom there was also Niculaie Bădălău, Economy minister.

The draft law stipulated that Romanians must pay a special allowance to provide financial aid to their old parents, grandparents or great grandparents, otherwise they will be fined or even sent to prison.

PM Viorica Dăncilă said last week that neither the Romanian Government nor PSD endorse this bill.

A recent report warned over the growing ageing population in Romania.
