The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, launched, on Thursday, a new series of accusations against the leadership in Chisinau and accused Romania of wanting to “annex” the Republic of Moldova.
“At the same time, Western politicians and officials who openly campaign for the “European option” continue to visit Moldova. On October 4 this year, in Chisinau, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu urged the leadership in Chisinau to work more actively so that the citizens “clearly understand that the future of Moldova is in the EU”. But why was he shy? He should have said this: not in the EU, but in Romania. This is what they want”, stated Maria Zakharova.
She quoted Ciolacu as saying that Russia “will lead the country into isolation and poverty” and added ironically: “We see how “prosperous” the European Union is.”
The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry talked about the “Romanian occupation” and launched a string of false data about the period when Bessarabia was part of Romania.
“The absurdity of such statements is that, as history shows, it was the Romanian occupation from 1918-1940 that brought poverty, ruin, depopulation and mass attacks to Bessarabia. On the contrary, belonging to the Russian Empire and the USSR was marked by Moldova’s prosperity. All this is proven by facts, figures and real data”, claimed the spokeswoman of the Russian MFA.
Zakharova continued the series of unfounded accusations regarding the situation in the Republic of Moldova and spoke about the “colonial dependence” towards which Moldovans are being pushed. “It is obvious that the tactics of promoting the non-existent “Russian threat”, including unfounded accusations regarding our country’s attempts to organize a coup d’état in Moldova, do not work. Moldovans don’t believe it. The inhabitants of the country see the failed anti-popular policy of the authorities and the disastrous reality that hides behind the slogans and slogans about the so-called “European course” of the current regime in Chisinau. In reality, they are pushed into colonial dependence, to abandon themselves themselves, not to mention their own history. People see and draw conclusions.”
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu was on an official visit to Chisinau the other day, he had a meeting with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, during which they discussed the European path of the neighboring country across the Prut.
“Romania believes in the European vocation of the Republic of Moldova and will continue to unequivocally support the continuation of this path”, stated Ciolacu.
In the context in which the visit takes place shortly before the referendum that will take place in the Republic of Moldova regarding the accession to the European Union, on the same day as the presidential elections in this country, an important topic addressed during the meeting was the European course of the neighboring country of across the Prut, states the Executive in an official statement.
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu emphasized on this occasion that Romania believes in the European vocation of the Republic of Moldova and will continue to unequivocally support the continuation of this path that the Chisinau authorities have undertaken with confidence and responsibility, managing to face crises and challenges hybrids, without precedent, appeared against the backdrop of the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
PM Ciolacu retorts: “Aggressive Russian propaganda distorts historical data”
Marcel Ciolacu responded on Thursday to the accusations of the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zaharova, saying that “the Russian authorities are desperately trying to change the European route of the Republic of Moldova”.
“Romania remains a firm supporter of the Republic of Moldova and its European future and will continue to support the citizens and the authorities in Chisinau to fulfill their objectives in this regard. Russia’s aggressive propaganda, which distorts historical data and ignores current realities, must be fought by all means, so that the goal of integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Union is achieved,” states a government statement, issued on Thursday.
“The Russian authorities are desperately trying to change the European path of the Republic of Moldova by propagating fake news. I encourage all the leaders from Chisinau not to be intimidated by such actions. Romania stands shoulder to shoulder with the Republic of Moldova in fulfilling the European dream”, declared Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, according to the quoted press release.
“Along with the other EU member states, Romania will continue to support the Republic of Moldova for the consolidation of democratic institutions and the ability to counter the aggressive hybrid attacks it faces from the Russian Federation“, the Executive also states.
