Slovak President pays state visit to Romania, meets Romanian President, PM

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis welcomed his Slovak counterpart, Andrej Kiska, at Cotroceni Palace on Monday afternoon. President of the Slovak Republic is paying a state visit on Monday and Tuesday to Romania, at the invitation of Klaus Iohannis.

The two presidents have tete-a-tete talks and will hold a joint press conference. The Slovak president will decorate several Romanian war veterans and will exchange decorations with his Romanian counterpart.

According to a release of the Presidential Administration, an official reception takes place at the Cotroceni Palace on Monday.

The Romanian Presidency also informs that the main target of the visit is the enhancement of the positive dynamic of the relation between Romania and Slovakia, on the political, economic levels, as well as the cooperation on European current topics.

“The two high officials will discuss and decide new methods of strengthening the excellent bilateral politic relationship. (…) Taking into account that Slovakia holds this semester the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the discussions will mainly focus on the European agenda. President Klaus Iohannis will be presenting Romania’s vision regarding the reflection process on Europe’s future, launched at the informal Summit in Bratislava held on 16 September 2016. The two presidents will also have stances regarding other European and regional current topics, the EU’s enlargement policy and its relating to the Eastern vicinity,” the Presidential release informs.

The Romanian president is also expected to stress the need to further consolidate the economic bilateral relation. The bilateral commercial exchanges posted a historical record last year, when it mounted to EUR 2.4 billion. As a matter of fact, President Iohannis and President Kiska are to attend the Romanian-Slovak business forum, aimed at stimulating the bilateral business ties and at developing further investments.

The Slovak president is also to meet PM Dacian Ciolos on Monday.

Slovakia’s President Andrej Kiska will go to the north-western city of Oradea, Bihor County on Tuesday, for the first time, to meet leaders the county’s Slovak community, the largest in Romania, as well as local administration officials. The Slovak president will also go to Nadlac to visit the local high school.

Bihor County is home to the largest Slovak community of Romania, about 8,500.
