Surprise scenario: Klaus Iohannis could step down from the President seat

The PSD-PNL coalition discussed in a meeting that took place on Monday a scenario according to which Klaus Iohannis could resign from Cotroceni, to occupy the position of interim president of the European Council, sources told Pro TV News.

According to these sources, the proposal would have come even from the social democrats, in a context in which the current president of the European Council, Charles Michel, made an unprecedented decision to leave his position prematurely, in July.

If no successor is found, EU procedures provide that, in the event of the termination of the mandate due to an “impediment”, the president of the European Council is temporarily replaced by the European leader whose country holds the six-month presidency of the EU Council.

According to political sources, negotiations are currently taking place for Iohannis to obtain the support of the leaders of the European Union to occupy the position of president of the European Council after the possible 3 months of interim. He would have already obtained the consent of France and Germany. The President of the European Council is elected by the European Council by a qualified majority. He is elected for a term of 2.5 years, which can be renewed only once.
Political sources in Romania say that a possible premature departure of President Klaus Iohannis from the Cotroceni Palace would also give the National Liberal Party an electoral advantage, because PNL leader Nicolae Ciucă, currently president of the Senate, would be the one who would take over the mandate of Romania’s president.
This could bring image capital to Nicolae Ciucă in the presidential elections. He has already declared that he is ready to run, “if the party asks him”, which will probably happen, given that Ciucă said in November 2023 that PNL will not form an alliance with PSD and will win the presidential elections.

“In the event of the termination of the mandate due to an impediment, the president of the European Council is temporarily replaced by the European leader whose country holds the six-month presidency of the EU Council.” What country is that?
