Technocrat minister considers joining USR

The minister for European Funds, Cristian Ghinea said on Wednesday that he would decide in a two weeks or three if he was to join the Save Romanian Union (USR) or not. He also revealed that other members of the Ciolos Cabinet might choose to join the same party.

Questioned in an interview to RFI if he intends to join any political party, Ghinea confirmed there have been discussions with the USR.

“I confirm there have been discussions with the Save Romania Union (…) In a political world where there is a trend to mock at technocrats, there are clean people in this party who say that, on the contrary, we started something good and that we should go on,” Ghinea argued.

The minister mentioned there have been two discussions with USR, adding that other ministers to join the party led by Nicusor Dan. “If we reach the conclusion together that we can altogether help so that this Gov’t projects should go on, then it’s possible to come out something with me and probably with other ministers, but it’s too early to get into details now,” he said.

The minister for European Funds explained that he and his colleagues who consider the USR offer would have to step aside if they accepted, arguing that “PM Dacian Ciolos was very clear in this respect”.
